THE
ARTIST, A TRUE COPY OF HER OWN CREATION
One of the most
surprising representations of Cypriot contemporary painting (waiting for a
general recognition) is Marina Giannou
Erotokritou. Born on 21 June 1979, in a family of parents-refugees (with
some Polish origines), after their town, Achna, had been occupied by Turkish
troops, during the war in 1974, the artist lived and spent her childhood in the
free zone of the district of Famagusta. She followed the secondary education
courses at the College St. George from Larnaca, then, she graduated a specialisation
in Marketing at Faculty of Finance. She began painting still at the tender age
of 5 years, studying paint-art in various private schools, for a period of 8
years. She had tried several styles and techniques, on different materials. In
the last 9 years, she lived in Nicosia, where participating in a few
workshopuri organised in the capital city of Cyprus. She exposed works in
collective exhibitions in Cyprus, Greece and Italy, enjoying the attention of critics and the specialized press. With a
surrealistic tone, her creations materialized in a few projects, of which we
mentioning: "The outlook of Woman"
(10 works) and "The Man",
a series of male-portraits. In the first of these, Marina Erotokritou is trying
to externalise a woman's inner world. By performing the work in her own
workshop, as completion, the artist felt that she identifies, as a matter of
fact, with her own creation. The result is a projection of her own soul. The artist captures living inside, her
contours speaking as well as unspoken
words, the colours are their steam… When the artist considered that they are not
the absolute expression, takes their place, transforming herself into her own
creation. Her presence between her works not distinguished her, on the contrary…
Finally, you don’t know which is the artist and which is her creation…In what
follows here, it is a selection from the plastic universe of Marina Giannou Erotokritou, who is
coming for the first time in Romanian space, like a rainbow from Aphrodite’s Wonderland.
